Brandon Brewer is a Detroit-based filmmaker and actor dedicated to telling authentic, high-stakes stories rooted in the Detroit experience. After a career pivot that led him back to his hometown, Brewer founded his creative practice on the principle of “radical authenticity”—utilizing real-world locations and community-based casting to bridge the gap between cinema and reality. In his latest project, AYNIO, Brewer wore many hats, including writing the script to overseeing full production completion. His work focuses on the intersection of sports, economic pressure, and the psychological weight of community expectation.
This project is driven by a deep personal mandate. Written after a significant professional setback after being laid off from what I thought was my forever career after years of hardwork and a return to my hometown of Detroit, AYNIO reflects the high-stakes journey of a young man from a low-income area who feels the immense obligation to be “the one that made it.” The film offers a crucial, insider perspective on the pressures and vulnerabilities of college athletes in a landscape increasingly defined by sports betting—a timely and necessary conversation. Our goal is to create a film that not only thrills but also leaves an indelible impact on viewers, fostering a deeper empathy for those navigating the expectations and exploitation in college sports today. We wanted to make this film as authentic as all possible, using former college basketball players, college coaches and members of the community for the majority of our cast. We shot at all real locations in the Detroit area that embody the environment, including actors’ real houses, real auto body shop that I once worked at, all to make our vision as authentic as possible. –Brandon Brewer.
